For me anyway this phone can do most things that a ‘normal’ smartphone can do but with the advantage of more volume and brighter colours. Going around the outside has a torch button on the right side; the base has micro USB and a microphone. The left side has volume + and – as well as a 3.5mm socket for headphones. The top is clear as the flip open would cover any socket or button there, this leaves the back that has camera, torch and help button in a line.
When closed the front of the unit can still show things like time and date as well as battery state etc, open it and that blanks and the screen springs to life. When open the lower part of the screen has a total of nineteen large buttons no more than three across and the ubiquitous five position joystick control.
Like all Emporiaphones this has a button on the back – here it looks like a finger print reader – to cycle through up to five contact numbers which if you live alone could be vital if you fall and are unable to get up again. However this can be covered if you wish by a second phone back included.
In the box are a set of earbuds, a micro USB to USB lead, a charge dock as well as the manual and the WhatsApp Guide.
Yes you can browse the Internet either using your Wi-Fi or mobile data, it remembers recent sites so not always necessary to type long URL.
For someone slowing their life down this could be all you need.

Here I am looking at the FLIP Basic and the Select these are the two smallest phones of the new range I was shown.
The Flip Basic is the smallest of the phones and while it does have an ‘assistance’ button the back it is really just a phone and text item. 9.5x5x1.3cm when closed 16x5x.8cm when opened. The screen is 4.5x3.5cm which is 2.2inches.
It is available from Amazon SIM free for £40.
However for not that much more you can get more of a phone which does calls and SMS and takes pictures has a FM radio and more.

This is the Emporia Select still a Flip open phone it is 10x5x2cm when closed, 19.5cm when open, the screen is 5x4cm and that is a 2.5inch screen. This is bright and clear with large digits and it is very easy to read.
However when closed you can still see information like time and date.
The left side has volume + and – buttons while the right side has torch and camera buttons.
There are still a lot of older people who have never had a mobile phone, all quite at ease with a landline but not sure how to setup – this is easy – and use a mobile phone.
This like all Emporia phone it has an assistance button on the back that gives one touch help by automatically going through up to five numbers until it gets a human answer.
I was surprised that Emporia had been 29 years with assisted phones and to be honest I had never heard of this Austrian company before a meeting last week with a man who has worked with a number of companies all helping those who are older and possibly also have either or both sight and hearing problems.
The manual is in five languages with all the parts clearly marked inside front cover diagram and the English pages starting at page 22. Setup is well covered and all you need is to insert the battery and a Nano SIM and then charge the battery all very well explained.

A micro USB to USB cable is supplied as is a USB front 13amp plug. As most will know micro USB can only fit one way but here a clever lead has an extra bit that means you can only fit it correctly. There is also a charging dock for those who want to just put the phone in the dock and so it is always charged, you just need to remember to put it in your pocket when you go out.

It has good volume and brightness so even those with problems should be able to use it.
